What is a prostate exactly? A prostate is a walnut sized gland that helps to secrete an alkaline milky fluid that makes up 30 percent of semen and helps to reduce acidity in the vaginal canal to help prolong the life of sperm after sex and it also helps to maintain and control urination. At a certain point in life, it becomes increasingly important to take more precautions and to pay more attention to ones prostate especially since new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed each year in North America. Much like anything else that is health related, the cause for prostate cancer is a mix of genetic, environment and how you take care of yourself. What you eat, what your daily habits are, how healthy you are already, these are all factors that affect your overall health, this includes your prostate. Sadly, prostate cancer can go unnoticed for quite a long time before it gets to a critical point. Here are some signs you will need to look out for:

  • Difficulty urinating
  • Constant feeling of needing to urinate
  • Burning sensation when you urinate
  • Frequent urination, especially at night time
  • Painful ejaculation
  • Blood in urine or semen
  • Inability to urinate

The best thing to do would be to adopt healthy habits that can target cancer prevention and help promote a healthy prostate. To start off, it is important to take a look at your diet. Excessive amounts of red meat (which is typically full of hormones) and food containing trans-fats are far more likely to contribute to the production of cancer cells. Fats, like those found in red meat tend to speed up and increase testosterone production and high testosterone levels are more likely to stimulate any dormant cancer cells. Supplements containing saw palmetto have been known to help in preventing and improving many negative prostate conditions, such as hyperplasia or regulating urination. Vitamin D and omega-3’s have also been known to have positive effects towards slowing down prostate cancer. Eating dark green vegetables or adding them to a smoothie is also useful for keeping a healthy prostate due to the fact that greens tend to have very detoxifying properties and help your body to produce a lot of vitamin D. Overall, prostate cancer is sadly, typically very hard to notice until it reaches an advanced state, there are many natural ways to prevent it from happening, involving a lot of self-care and self-awareness and of course, by being aware of what you put in your body!
