Our immune system is the defense system in our bodies that specializes in keeping us healthy. In order for it to work properly, our immune systems need to be properly maintained so they can detect and fight off a wide range of pathogens like viruses or unhealthy bacteria or parasites and be able to distinguish and remove them from the healthy tissues in our bodies. This is an incredibly important task for our bodies. We need a healthy white blood cell count in order to have a properly functioning immune system that can fight off illnesses. How do we do that? We need to be conscious of our lifestyles and how they can impact our bodies. In our day-to-day lives, it is normal to succumb to certain vices, we are only human after all, but it is good to know what it is that we do that impacts our bodies in such a way and how and why.
What we consume is probably one of the biggest factors when it comes to how healthy our immune systems are. Having a varied diet rich in lean proteins, fruits, vegetables and water are steps in the right direction. Many fruits contain high amounts of vitamin C and antioxidants, which are useful in maintaining a healthy white blood cell count as well as giving you a natural source of energy that can boost your immune system. Lean proteins such as poultry, fish or tofu are good in helping to develop muscles in the body as well as helping to satiate hunger without much fat or sugar, thus being a useful source of energy for your body to utilize throughout the day. Many vegetables are useful for detoxifying your liver as well as contain a lot of water and little to no sugar and fats, especially vegetables like radishes, asparagus, beets, lettuce, spinach, kale, beans and mushrooms. Try to opt for natural juices instead of store bought ones, which can contain a lot of sugar and/or artificial sweeteners. It is also important to drink a sufficient amount of water so our bodies can eliminate waste, keep our joints lubricated and generally keep hydrated.
Detoxing is also important when it comes to maintaining a healthy immune system. When we have waste build up in our bodies it slows down our metabolism and when our metabolism slows down, it takes longer for our bodies to process and eliminate illnesses. Along with adopting a healthier diet and eliminating certain vices like smoking or drinking excessively, detoxifying your body on a seasonal basis is a useful way to help strengthen your immune system. If you take the time to take care of yourself, you will reap the benefits of having an immune system that just won’t quit!
