It’s the time of year where we all like to huddle indoors and stay warm with a nice cup of cocoa or tea, a warm blanket and spread contagious germs that will make everybody sick, including ourselves. Contrary to popular belief, we do not get colds from the temperature outside; we get it from staying inside with other people and with that, our germs tend to spread more easily to everyone within breathing distance, which is enough to make even the least germ phobic person run for a bottle of hand sanitizer and a hazmat suit. Sadly, because of this, many people are bound to get sick with colds and flus. Over the counter medicine can work wonders, however, they tend to come with negative side effects like dependency, nausea, dizziness and drowsiness, there are, however, many natural means to help prevent and get rid of colds and flus!

Preventative measures are always a must especially when winter rolls around and everyone is more susceptible to illness. Echinacea is a well-known and useful plant not only to treat colds but to prevent them. It is also known to help boost the immune system as well as fight off infections in the respiratory system and is suitable for both children and adults! Another, lesser known fantastic remedy for cold and flu is red elm mucilage also known as slippery elm. It is essentially like the mucus of an elm tree and is a powerful expectorant as well as a remedy for a sore throat and throat infections. Native Americans have used slippery elm as an ingredient in healing salves for burns, boils, ulcers and skin inflammation as well as a remedy for stomach problems and sore throats for centuries. Red elm mucilage coats the throat and stomach thus helping to heal burns and protect the respiratory tract.

Another incredible natural remedy is oregano oil. Oregano oil acts as a natural antibiotic and antioxidant when ingested and helps to destroy any negative bacteria in the respiratory tract. The health properties of oregano oil were first discovered in ancient Greece where it was often used as an antibacterial for infections in the skin or in injuries. Nowadays, the use for oregano oil hasn’t actually changed all that much except it has expanded to also being used for sore throats, colds and throat infections as well as disinfecting wounds.

Reishi mushrooms also have very powerful immune boosting abilities and are used frequently in natural medicine to help fight off the flu as well as to help strengthen the lungs against bronchitis and asthma. Angelica is another powerful plant that can have healing properties when it comes to colds and flus. It not only helps with sleep which is essential when you are sick, but it helps to boost the appetite so one can still nourish oneself while sick but it helps with respiratory problems as well. Elderberries are an ancient remedy that has been primarily used in Europe to treat most forms of immune deficiencies and is quite useful to help fight off sickness throughout the body such as viral infections, tonsillitis and coughs, colds and flus.

Winter is the time of year where many people, unfortunately end up with a bad case of the cold or flu and many people rush to the drug store and end up with a bunch of medication that will definitely work but is likely to come with many weird if not harmful side effects such as nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, anxiety, issues sleeping and some can even be addictive. This is why plant based remedies still exist, for those who want to try to find a natural alternative to help fight off colds and flus rather than rely on unnatural chemicals.
